You can travel leisurely along wide, groomed trails or blaze your own trail through endless snow-filled country terrain. We have an extended winter season and heavy annual snowfall, so you are guaranteed to get snow. * Polar Bear Express runs from the last week of June to the long weekend of September. It is a train ride to Moosonee and Moose Factory, the Hudson Bay Company's main trading post in 1673. The ride mirrors the travels of the fur traders and the military strategist, Des Troyes, who conquered James Bay in 1686. * Cochrane Winter Carnival is held the second week of February every year. It is known as the longest running winter carnival in Northern Ontario. Come and chase the winter "blahs". Take part in the Polar Bear Dip where we simply cut a large hole in Lake Commando and dive right in! We have the Chimo fishing derby on Lake Commando, the pancake eating contest, wing-a-thon, talent show, dog pulls, snowmobile races, snow-putt challenges, horseshoe games. Take in the Chimo Bantam Hockey Tournament, attend the Police/Firefighters hockey "grudge" match, carry a torch in the Torchlight Parade and Bonfire. * Polar Bear Riders Poker Runs are held throughout the winter for snowmobile enthusiasts. The Polar Bear Riders Club was the winner of the 1995/96 Yamaha National Pride Cup for the Best Overall Snowmobile Club in all of Canada. Cochrane's trails are known as the World?s #1 Snowmobile Trails. * May Run Fishing Derby is held on the Victoria Day Weekend and the fishing season officially opens. There are countless fishing derbies with categories and prizes that encompass all you can catch. * Trug Drag is sponsored by the Cochrane Richelieu and is held annually. One lake in our area boasts more trophy pike than any other lake in Canada, some of them weighing in at more than 20 pounds. Cochrane is also famous for its trophy moose and bear.
